What method have you guys found works best for cleaning out tractor fuel tanks? I have already tried diesel fuel and a chain in the tank. Anybody got a better way to shake it than by hand? Thanks for any help. JaredM

I have also used the Muratic acid treatment with good results. I would add though that you should throw a box of baking soda in with a couple of gallons of water when finished as this neutralizes the acid. Mark

Buy a gallon of Muratic Acid (paint store) and pour in the tank. Seal it and shake it; the acid will eat all the rust & leave a shiny interior surface. Heat is generated so be careful. Rubber gloves + goggles are a necessity. Rinse with hot water and use a shop vac to remove any excess moisture. Use duct tape to attach a 3/4" heater hose or similarhose to get all the way inside the tank. Rinse the dry tank with diesel fuel or gasoline to help reduce new rusting since the metal is now VERY clean.
Not much time is needed; be careful when working with acid!!!

Next time you're doing some fieldwork, SECURELY strap the tank inside your rear tractor wheel after adding about a pint of nuts. (Don't use rocks, they just end up adding a lot of dust that can be hard to rinse out.) Every once in a while, reposition the tank to get the nuts to contact other areas. It'll do a surprisingly good job.

Dump in a couple of pounds of good size nuts, strap the tank to another tractor wheel and drive it around for a while. You could use a sealer when you're done. That has worked for me, but there are a couple of dozen other suggestions in the archives. Just type "tank cleaning" in the Search For field at the top right side of this page.
