The disc brake on the left side of my MTA was locking up severely. I took it apart and everything looked good, not rusty etc. I replaced the 5 steel balls. Now it still grabs quickly but at least it doesn't lock up like before. What else do I need to do in order to get it to work smoothly? Can the grooves the balls work in be worn? Can I remachine these plates? Thanks in advance for any help.
DeWayne

If the disc brakes are anything like a Super C's brakes, well I may offer one nugget of wisdom. I took my father's Super C's brakes apart and replaced the disc pads, all looked good. After trying the brakes, one side locked up and wouldn't release. After many other attempts to correct the problem, itr turned out that I had mistakenly "flipped" the ball-groove-expander assembly. By that I mean if you take that assembly off and re-install it where top is bottom and vice versa. Hope this helps. Let us know what you found. Best regards, Dennis.

Sounds like the linkage might be hitting the inside of the housing. There was an IH correction to grind a little off the inside of the housing if they hung up or did not work right.
Fixed my 350.
I think it's in the IT manual.

If it were mine I would look at the groove/ramps and make sure they are smooth on the ramp bottoms. They need to be shaped like the balls, so grinding must be careful, or machine controlled. One of the important factors is the total stack height in the housing. If there is a lot of clearance, the linkage will not have the correct geometry to apply smoothly. Shim plates to go in the cover to reduce the gap could be made from stainless. Cleaning and removing glaze can assist in action for a while.
Good luck, JimN
