I am finishing up a 53 farmall cub where the gas tank and hood are one piece. the gas tank as a dent in the left side. this dent is somewhat deep meaning that it needs to banging out before any putty application could take place. has anyone gotten deep dents out of these gas tanks, if so what is the secret or best approach?

I have tried the pin welding method and they weren't durable enough to pull that stiff metal. What I ended up doing was welding a 3/8" nut on the dent and then pulling it with a slide hammer. Then cut the nut off and grind the spot welds off and then putty the small area to make it smooth.

Yes, you weld on pins and pull those types of dents out, not hammer them out.

I would think an auto body shop with a stud welder could weld a few studs on the dent and pull them out with a slide hammer. You can grind the studs off and smooth it up with body filler.

Take it to a body shop that has a pin welder to pop dents out of auto bodys. have them to stick 3 or 4 pins on the dent and pop it out with a slide hammer.

Grind the area clean and put your body putty on in layers. It will stay with no problem.

Putting air pressure in the the tank is VERY unlikely to pop out the dent and IS very dangerous. Some have made for themselves special hammers that will fit through the filler neck opening. If it was important enough, I might drill a hole about 3/4" diameter on the opposite side of the tank and use a long rod with end ground to ball shape that I could tap to knock out the dent. Work the outer edges of the dent first. The hole would have to be welded closed. Dangerous on a fuel tank for the unknowing.
