I think I need to repolarize my generator on my '49 H. It is wired as a 6 volt negative ground, do I repolarize the same way as a positive ground system? Or would it be best to switch it back to positive ground like it once was?

yes, it polarizes the same way. If you reverse the battery you will need to reverse the ampmeter leads also, unless it is reading backwards now. Also, it it has a coil instead of magneto, the + term of coil should go to points if + ground, or - term of coil to points if neg ground.

I polarized as described, but ampmeter still reads discharge. Could it be another problem? It is a distributor ignition, 6 volt, negative ground. What now?

While it is running, run a jumper lead to the small terminal on the gen. while watching the amp gauge, ground the other end of the jumper. If it charges then, it may be that the contacts inside the regulator need to be cleaned, or maybe the reg is not grounded properly. If it does not the gen may need repair, have it tested. Good luck, JimN
