Has anyone ever heard of Astro tractor tires

Astro farm tractor tires were quite common here in Canada back in the 1970s and 80s. I ran quite a few of them and was always pleased with the service from them. About 15 years ago they seemed to disappear.

I have an Astro tire on my Farmall 130, I bought it used about 15 years ago to match a 30% worn tire on the other side, and it out lasted that tire and looks like it's going to outlast another. The Astro tire still has about 1" high tread, but the amazing part, there is no weather cracking on it anywhere. The 130 has probably sat outside the equivilant of 5 years in the past 15 years. My Super A has Generals I put on it new in 1993, they are wearing good, but have weather cracks galore. Here is the kicker, 6 month old Firestones on my 140 are starting to weather crack already, and I bet it hasn't sat outside 60 hours since those tires were installed.

My tractors are very seldom out on public roads, and never on black top. To think I listened to all you guys and your hype about those Firestone Field and Road Tires.

Now, mind you, back 30 years ago, I never had to concern myself about weather cracking, we wore them fast enough they were history in 5 or 6 years. I was in a used tractor lot last week, must have been close to a 100 tractors there, and every tire had weather cracks. The owner of the lot told me today's tires crack within 1 year doesn't matter what breed they are, or whether they are stored inside or out. Are the rest of you guys seeing this same thing?

Thank you for that. I sent an e mail off to Astro this morning, probably hear from them next week. I asked them for location of dealers and distributors. I see they are situated in Florida, so just maybe their tires do stand up to sunshine.

I have Firestone Field and Road on two of my tractors, they are inside, the oldest pair is 4 years old, look like new. Crack when inside, I don't think so. New Goodyears on my M 6 years ago, same thing. I have NEVER seen cracks on automotive tires. I only drive about 12000 miles/year, split between two vehicles, so the tires are on them several years. Must be those Canadian winters, freezing and thawing, etc.

CNKS: I'm sure the winter does have an adverse effect. However I don't remember seeing tires crack like this back in my farming days. I had 4 tractors that never saw a roof over them. I will grant you, all of them were running 800 or more hours per year, thus tires never got to be that old. Probably the longest was Goodyear duals on 1066 and that was 9,000 in 7 years. They were cracked at the end, but nothing like I'm seeing on 5 year old tractors today. I don't believe we're getting value for money anymore.

Jim: Thanks, good to hear they still exist. I'll do a bit of searching. I'd buy a set of them. I always thought they were good value for money invested.

Yes. New tires crack too soon! About 3 years and I notice cracking on the farm tractor tires.

Car tires are bad these days as well. Our car had new tires in '04 and I don't know if they will last this year - lots of cracks in the tread area already, but only about 20% of the tread worn off.

They don't make them like they used to...
