Four years ago I bought a '50 B at an auction, the sellers put in a new battery along with a new rear tire, ostensibly to facilitate the sale of the tractor. Two years ago that battery went south. Bought a new one then (an Interstate 6V) identical to the one that failed. THAT one is belly up today. Is it me? Am I being overly optimistic to expect a battery (at the better part of $75 a pop) to last more than 24 months? If its me, say so, I've got big shoulders. Best, Joe Howard

I think the more frequently a battery is used the longer it will last. I have seen this over the years on all my machines from the lawnmower to the truck. I don't think it matters whether it is 6V or 12V.

The best battery I have ever owned was a AC Delco 12V that was in my Cub for 12 years. I use it to mow the lawn every week and push snow in the winter. The thing that killed it was one of the kids playing on it left the key and lights on and after that the battery would not take a charge. I also had AC Delco batteries in my Chevy pickups that have lasted 8 years routinely.

I find that if I lie around too long I don't feel like working also!! Phil

Senior moment, folks. The '50B is a green B not your garden variety IH!! I was on the wrong forum. But the result is the same, the battery just didn't last!! I use the tractor for miscellaneous things including riding around the n'hood but am keenly aware of the importance of being sure the battery is "used" and "charged" but it is still in my "lap". I'll contact a Interstate rep tomorrow and see what they have to say. Incidentally, it is a mag and the battery is only used for starting and the generator and regulator are working. Best, JH

No, you are not expecting too much. Quality has gone down in many areas, batteries being one of them.

My H has a battery that is about 6 years old now and still works fine. Hooray for my generator and magneto!

I buy only Optima batteries now. So far good luck with them, only have 3 years on the first one I bought so we will see how it does.

First you do not have a 50B as they quit building them in 47. So what do you have and doea it have a MAG or a DIST and what else is not original? Batts will last 5 or more yrs so you must have something else that is wrong.

I had to run out to the yard to check, but I have had an Optima 6v in most everything on the place at one time or another since '96. I bought it blind, about flipped when I got the bill, but it has been the best battery I ever owned. And it has sat for at least a year at a time. I understand that it may be a fluke, as it's the only one I ever had, but I may bite the bullet and try another one.

Joe: I can't agree with the idea that 6 volt batteries are only good for two years

I've been running 6 volt batteries neigh outo 50 years. Back in the 1970s, I probably had as many 8 of them one the go at any given time. I don't ever remember getting less than 5 or 6 years out of a 6 volt battery. I would put the average at about 7 years. In fact I just removed one from my Farmall Super A, after 13 years of service. I do live in a cold climate.

I do agree, with most of the others, batteries need activity. Even in the off season, I always start my tractors at least once a month, and let them run for an hour. That doesn't matter whether 6 volt or 12, gas or diesel. I usually don't run more than one or two tractors all winter, never have even when I had 9 of them.

Yep, a battery that's used every day lasts better than one that ain't but naah, 6 volts never last very long. I buy the cheapies cuz they ain't gonna last anyway. $29.95 at Wal-mart and most farm stores.

If you do not charge and discharge a battery, it life will be shorter by far compared to using it. If you are not using the tractor a lot, run the battery down, then recharge it every couple of months. I buy my batteries from a local manufacturer, and seem to have good luck with them, my H battery is 2 years and still going strong. My I will go home and it will be dead.

A 75$ interstate must have a warranty!
Charging at 10 volts will reduce the time on task. Check your charging volts! JimN

I never have seen a 6V battery that you could trust much over 2 years. Don't care what ya pay for it, either.

Just something about those 6 volt dudes.

My last 6 volt battery lasted 11 years.

Of course, I did take care of it.
