I took the 460D to a wonderful old mechanic(70+)(I know enough to be dangerous) and asked him what was wrong with it. He listened for a second and said "you have a burnt exhaust valve" next he held onto the fuel tubes just before the injectors and said one and six injectors are sorta working but not right, but your pump is working good. He said you can feel the pulse when they inject. I tried comparing them and I couldn't at first, but I finally felt the difference. A sharp pulse vs a softer pulse. I was really impressed. What a neat old guy and a wealth of knowledge. He has been working on tractors for 50 yrs. He said he would do the valve job if I tore it down and brought him the head. I plan on doing that as soon as I clear a work spot. Any advise?

Hi Gary, I was talking to Jimmy King yesterday and he mentioned you lived somewhere up near me at Rolla. Where are you located as I try and find other Farmall guys in the area? My e-mail is open if you care to response off the forum. Have a good one and don't get too hot as it going to be another warm one. Hal

I tried to email you from the YT site and it said there is a problem with the email address. I get that alot. We have a little hobby farm out side Vienna Just a couple horses, longhorn cattle, old chevys, flathead fords, and IH tractors. topsaddle@first-comm.net

Only advice I have is to ask him if you can watch him work!

The people that spent most of their working years on diagnosing and fixing these old tractors are a vanishing resource. About 25 years ago we took a Super M to the shop because it was down on power and had a hint of a miss. About 5 minutes after it rolled in the door, a retired IH mechanic stopped by to chat with the crew. One of them started the SM and said "What do you think, Floyd?" Floyd listed to it idle from about 2 feet away, and said, "Burned exhaust valve. Most likely #3 cylinder." He was right on target!

Ive always found the best way to learn is from the person or persons that are older then you. Then keep your month shut stand back and listen then when hes done doing his thing ask questions if you don't understand some thing. Now days to many kids think they know what there doing but knowing how to do something takes years and years to learn and then you can still learn something new. Even this post told me something I didn't know and I hope I can remember it if I work on a diesel

Gary:

Run the tractor till she is nearly out of fuel, then get the tinwork and tank off of it. (or do it like Allan did his hydro) Get a good gasket set, coppercoat, and a NEW set of head bolts. Those will run you about $140- 150. These bolts tend to stretch just a bit, so you do need new ones.

Be careful, that head is darn heavy!

Make sure he is supplied with the appropriate refreshments for the work. Learn from his actions, and realize they already have the shortcuts installed. Great find, JimN
