The answers below are good. (except the one that does not make sense to the topic) The rings grooves in the cylinder #4 are also carboned up to the point that the rings cannot collapse inward enough to get past the ridge they speak of. Push the piston back down to ridge ream. JimN

IHC Deep Freeze in reply to Jd's sound like cork guns, 07-27-2006 13:11:26
We have a model 111 deep freeze in our basement that runs. It was purchased used in 1957 and keeps on running. Any idea when and where this model was made?

Probably built at the IH refrigeration plant in Evansville, IN...the plant that was converted to produce M1 Garands during WWII.

That plant's been Whirlpool for a lot of years now.

You are encountering what is called "ring ridge". As the piston and rings move up and down in the sleeve, the sleeve wears out, except for a small portion at the top because the piston never gets that far up. You may need to use a "ridge reamer" to cut that ridge away, or just push a little harder. You run the risk of breaking some of the rings, and possibly damaging the piston, but if you are replacing the pistons and rings anyhow, it doesn't matter.

Did you use a ridge reamer on the sleeve/cylinder before tring to pull the piston?? If you didn't then that where your problem is. Slleve/cylinder wear and the rings leave what is called a ridge at the top, most of the time its about a 1/4 or so tall and if the ridge isn't removed you will have problems pulling the picton and whats worse if you use the same sleeves you can brake rings when you put the picton back in
