The serial number on the plate looks like it was
scratched off. The lower left hand corner has
0540 stamped in it. The upper right hand corner
looks like the numbers 70486 stamped in it. The guy I bought it from doesnt know. Is there any other way to find out what year it is? First time
owner. Thanks

Well, based on what's left of the numbers you see, you should be able to put a 2 or a 3 ahead of your 5-digit number and get the serial number. As mentioned, the casting codes will get you mighty close. The engine serial number won't match the number on your plate and may or may not tell you much. (And that assumes that's the originial engine block!)

FWIW, here's a couple things I look at on a Super A to gauge age, before I ever look at the serial number:
-Does it have sealed beam (the "pancake" shaped) headlights or the teardrop shaped lights? Teardrops are earlier, pre-1953.
-Does it have ball and socket tie rod ends or the newer automotive tie rods that bolt on? (Beware, some have been converted)
-Does it have the small steering wheel or the big one? A big steering wheel could indicate a 1954 Super A-1.
-If still 6 volt, is the regulator/cutout on top of the generator (older), or underneath(newer)?

Hope this helps
Al

Look for the casting number/letter dates on major components, like clutch housings, torque tube, transmission case, engine block. They will show month, date and letter code for the year. 1947 (first year of Super A) will have a "Q". Go up the alphabet by year - 1948="R", etc. Last year is 1954=Z. 1951 was both "U" and "W". "V" was not used for any year. You ought to be able to narrow it down pretty close.

Look on the engine block just above #1 spark plug. There should be a raised area with the serial number stamped in it. Use that number to look up the year under Research & Info, then Serial Numbers in the left column of this page.
