I recently took my booster off underneath the floor of my int. 1600 loadstar..the booster is located underneath the floor .There is a vacuum line fron manifold that runs to it ..well the fitting broke off at the booster and I took it all apart and got the fitting out .I guess I got it back together wrong because now when i start the truck up it lock's rear brakes...If I shut off engine it will roll nice ..soon as i start it up it somehow ties up the brakes..What part do i have in wrong in the booster?

Tried twice to post where you can get manuals, but this site considers them "competition"...even though this site doesn't sell truck manuals [go figger!].

It's www-dot-binderbooks-dot-com ...bring yer checkbook, 'cause they're not like buying a Haynes manual at AutoZone; these are reproductions of the factory service manuals.

IH used the Bendix Hydrovac--which sounds like what you're describing--at least back as far as the 1950 L-Series trucks. In the L-Series service manual [CTS-11], there's a dandy 3-page breakdown on how to do a "bench overhaul" on one.

Good Luck!

Good luck.

There are several boosters found on IHC trucks. They are touchy safety related devices. Without training, and a manual, they become hazzardous to you and others. Your local library may have the manual! The check valve is necessary. It is needed because brakes might be needed if the engine dies on a big hill with a load! I'm not being rude, a vehicle that will not run is safer than one which will not stop. Be safe, JimN

The check valve only retains vacum if your engine stalls and prevents gas vapors from entering the booster when the engines shut down. You must have assembled it incorrectally or damaged a seal or diaphram. The booster works by sensing brake fluid pressure from the master cylinder and appllying vacum to the diaphram thus appllying more pressure to the brakes both front and rear. So you will have to pull it apart and see if you can find the problem or spring for a rebuilt one.

There is supposed to be a check valve in the vacuum line from the intake manifold to the booster. Is it functioning correctly? The brakes should apply only when the master cylinder is actuated. The rear brakes should apply fractionally before the fronts , so I'd look for something in the master cylinder area first.

well I took the parts out of the booster apart to get inside and drive the threads out of the fitting ...so then i put everything back in and there was a spring loaded diaphram if i can remember ..it has been 5 months..I wish I had a service manual to show mw that part..Do you know how i could find one ?...I will check out the check valve idea ..but I am not sure that would sovble problem..that would hold vacuum in booster as to have an emergency supply I think after engine stall"s ..I have brake"s locked up as long as I have engine running ...soon as i shut off motor it will pull with my tractor by a chain..but soon as i start it and try to pull it with chain in neutral..it drags the brakes..
