Farmall Regular Questions

Hello All,

I just recently acquired a Farmall Regular. It is definitely a project. It is missing several parts and needs lot's of work. Upon initial inspection, we have come up with several questions I hope someone can help with.

1. It is missing the data plate on the tool box. Is there any way to tell what year it was manufactured?

2. There are two levers under the steering wheel. One looks as if it might have gone to the magneto (which is missing). Was this one for spark advance?

3. The other lever's rod extends out toward where the radiator once was. Did it go to radiator louvers?

4. It has an oil filter on the right hand side of the engine that is plumbed in with tubing. I don't see this in any pictures so far. Was this an option, or an aftermarket add-on, or just something someone cobbled up?

I'm sure there will be other questions later, but these things came to mind when looking her over the first time.

Some Regulars had the SN stamped (still on top of the LH frame rail) back near the clutch housing instead of near the radiator. That is where it is on my 1931 model.

Thanks to all!

It appears mine has been converted to the governor, as it has the notched rod going down the right hand side of the engine.

I'm not sure of the make of the oil filter, but it looks very similar to the Purolator on our "H", so it may well be original. I'll have to look to see if I can make out a manufacturer.

There is a serial number on the left frame rail up by the radiator, or where the radiator would go if she had one. I wrote down the number last night, but did not bring it with me to work. I'll get it later and see if I can find a serial number listing.

Thanks again to all who responded.

1.Yes, you will find the seial number stamped in the top of the lefthand frame rail near the radiator.
2.Yes, the front lever is for the spark advace providing yours is still equiped with the correct magneto. The rear lever was for the throttle and conected by a rod to the front of the carbretor throttle housing. It may have been converted to a variable speed governor in which case there will be a notched rod along side the fuel tank to control the governor directly.
3. The radiator would have been covered with a roll-up canvas curtain
4.Oil filters were standard equipment on the Regular about 1928 or 29, If it is a Pur-o-lator it is probably original.

the one lever is the throttle and the other is the spark sdvance. these tractors have a oil pump and i'm not sure of the year but i think it was'29 when ih started to use the purolator oil filter system. so your tractor is one of these. we have a '30 farmall regular that has the features as you describe.

The plate with the serial number would be located on the tool box , under the gasoline tank , near the rear of the engine block. If it isn't there then look on the top of the frame rails near the front of the tractor. They were stamped in the metal there. I would guess that the levers were for what you have described, the shutters and the mag advance. Since these tractors had no oil pump, I am confused about your plumbed in filter. Those engines were manually lubricated on the top end and the bottom was simply a dip system lubrication. I have a good manifold and a carb if you need one.
