When do you know that the pilot bearing going into the transmission on a Super M should be replaced? My Super M has a dry bearing noise when it idles in neutral. When the clutch is disengaged it makes no noice nor when it is in gear and moving. Can anyone lend some knowledge. Thanks in advance. Jim

There is a zert fitting on the flywheel for the pilot bearing. The is a access hole at the bottom of the clutch housing on the forward end. Hvae someone crank the motor by hand while you look through that whole. There is pocket at the end of your crank shaft that clloects the grease and it gets pushed into the pilot bearing. Don't pump to much or it will end up on your friction plate. I agree with Allen that more then likely your noise is coming from elsewhere.

Jim,

Your noise is elsewhere. And, just so we are on the same page, the pilot bearing lives up in the end of the crankshaft.

With the tractor setting there idling with your foot off the clutch, the pilot bearing is not even working. The crank and the input shaft are at the same speed.

Once you push the clutch, the crankshaft and the input shaft are at different speeds and the pilot bearing then spins and allows for the difference.

I would be looking more in the area of the transmission input shaft bearing or a countershaft bearing since the noise "seems" to lessen with load.

Allan

You are so right. The input bearing that goes into the transmission behind the hydraulic pump is the bearing I am referring to. I know where the pilot bearing is inside the flywheel but thought that the input bearing is by some referenced as a pilot bearing. I stand corrected but still wonder if this is the problem bearing.

Apparently I am the only one who read your post right. You said "pilot bearing going into the transmission". That is the needle bearing inside the fifth gear driver. If it comes apart it can cause grief. I think you can pull it forward with the input shaft to change it without pulling the transmission top cover.

I've never heard the pilot bearing make a noise, and I did lose one which broke two gears. It may be changed without pulling the top cover.
