Tractor is a Farmall 400 gas. When it's cold the tractor starts and runs great, until it gets to operating temp. Then it starts to lose power, cough, choke, back fire, and quit. I won't do anything to the tractor but turn the key off and let it set for a while and cool, maybe an hour. When I come back, it'll fire right up and run great again, until, again, it gets to operating temp, and quits.

History:
Last year it got out of time because the gear on the shaft that drives the distributor was worn. I replaced the shaft/gear, rebuilt distributor; new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, points, and condensor. Also went through fuel system, put carb kit in carburetor.

Any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks,
Scott

The coil makes sence. It"s the one item I didn"t replace. I even replaced the resistor. I"ll probably replace the condensor too just because "Ya never know" and because they"re cheap. I"ve never had to replace a coil, so I guess I didn"t even concider it.

To the contributor who mentioned "worn valves", I don"t think that is it because it is less than a minute from the time it acts up to the when it stops. It isn"t gradual power loss, and it sure does back fire.

Thanks for the info gang. It was a great first experience.

My guess would be that your coil is going bad. Shoot if you did all that other stuff I would almost bet you a case of beer that if you replace the coil your problem will go bye bye

Scott,

Is it an honest to God actual backfire? That means it's electrical. Hows' about that coil?

Gotta be something on the primary side of the ignition to be causing his backfire.

Had a car one time that would do that and it turned out to be a condenser screw had come loose.

But, he says it is tempreature related. 'Bout gotta be that coil, me thinks.

Condensers can be temperature sensitive as well.

And they are cheaper.

I almost killed an old man several years ago. He was dragging cedar trees for me with an A with a magneto. The condenser would get hot after about 20 minutes and the tractor would die. It was hand crank and he would crank it and fiddle with it until it cooled and started. He did this all day one day, thinking he was stalling it. When he finally came to the house and told me what he was doing we changed the condenser and fixed the problem.
