I suspect my oil cooler is leaking oil into the radiator. I have removed and plugged off the water lines leading to it, and will run the engine to see if oil runs out the cooler. The leak is very small. This tractor will never be under a load for any length of time. At the most, I may pull it at some local shows. My question is, if the cooler is bad, can I remove it and block off the oil passages with a plate? Does the oil flowing through the cooler feed anything, or does it just return to the pan? Thanks for your help- KB

Thanks for the help- this tractor will never see any real work, so I don't think the cooler really matters, especially after the dealer told me what a new one costs! Thanks again- KB

I'm sure that many guys have removed the oil cooler for that very reason. Heck, I don't think the very first of the 460 Diesels even had an oil cooler, you could check into that by having the parts guys at your Case-IH dealer pull up the picture in the parts book, see what sort plates they used to cover the passages. I'm sure it is possible to eliminate the oil cooler. If there is any possibilty you will work that engine for hours at a time, get a new cooler. Those engines need to stay as cool as possible.
