I'm currently restoring a MD for my grandson. Having a blast doing it as it is a great stress relief to go to the garage and tinker after a day at work. I wanted it to be as complete and as perfect as possible and without the time to get into the engine myself I decided to take it to a IH dealer that was recommended. The engine started and ran fine but had a lot of blow-by. Told the dealer I wanted it right but take in to consideration this tractor would spent 90% of its life in parades. I know parts for an MD are a lot more expensive and harder to find than a standard M but imagine my surprise when I got a call today with a quote of $6000 to $7000! I told them not to touch it and I would drive the 145 miles to pick it up. We can put up with some blow-by in the parades for that kind of money.

I'm working on a super M it's getting new sleeves and rings it was left with the head off in a barn for 5 or 6 years weren't nothing wrong with the pistons but the sleeves were coroded from exposure. If it was going to work a lot i would go all out but all it will do is look prety and parade.

You may find rings and a valve job do the trick without sleeves and pistons.

But then I always do a half-way job and am rarely disappointed with the results.

My tractors get worked. I can plan to tear an engine down again if it means saving $1,000 on a shoddy half-way fix. Some people's time is very valuable, therefore they are rich. They can afford to spend an extra couple of thousand dollars to avoid a couple of days work so they "do it right" the first time. I do measure everything but rarely do the tolerances meet factory specifications. I've never thrown a rod or spun a bearing by putting new bearings on lightly worn but grooved journals.

I won't feel like a total idiot if I ever have to tear an engine down prematurely.

I believe I fix 80% of what is wrong with an engine for 20% of the cost of "making it like new" and experience proves it out.

I don't know, but it does not sound too far off the mark to me. I put $2500 worth of parts into my H rebuilding the motor, and did all the work myself.

It could have been done for less, but I did not want to have to do it again because I had cut corners.

I'll say! Are you up to doing a ring/sleeve job yourself? Not really all that big of a deal once you get into it. And you can probably have the head reworked for 100-150 bucks. Otherwise, I'm with you, deal with the blow by.

Boy, I dunno.

Don't think ya could get a decent machine shop to take off the keepers for a hundred dollars.

Run one thru a shop lately? I just had a gasser head done and the total bill came to just under $700. Exhaust valves alone rang in at $150. :>(

My 450D head was $175 for the guides and the machine work at a real good shop.

Valves were about $25 from Case, and springs were $20, so with 12 of each, parts came to $540.

A little over $700. The valves and springs were all pitted but the head tested good.
