Our 1950 H is making a noise (tough to describe, kind of like a shuddering from the axle area) on the left side, presumably from either the bearings on the brake shaft, or the bearings on the axle itself. It's tough to pinpoint, but I'm leaning towards the brake bearings. Is there an easy way to determine this? The noise occurs most easily when the tractor is rolling, as opposed to driving under power.

I thought it would be easy to remove the brake bearing carrier and check them, but something isn't right. I removed the drum and carrier bolts, and used the bolts to pull the carrier out a ways. But then I was getting some large resistance and figured it was more complicated then this. The manual I have doesn't go into any detail on this. I thought this was the procedure, but now I see a section that seems to say I basically need to take everything apart (rear axle, drive gear). That can't be right either. Is this going to be more difficult then I thought?

Are you sure it isn"t just the brake band "juddering" on the drum?? Operate the tractor without the brake band on it (careful "cause you cannot stop!!) and see if it makes the same noise.
If a brake is not used much it can make noise from the rust, moisture, etc. With the brakes installed & adjusted, run up to top speed in 5th gear and stop quickly several times to warm them up. PS: the set screw on the bottom should be turned in snug (brakes locked tight) and backed out 1/2 turn then lock the nut. Helps prevent dragging.

If you remove the brake drum (and maybe the seal), you will be able to see the bearing. If any balls are missing, it is bad. Otherwise, try tightening the bolt that holds the brake drum in place. Everything said about breaking the bearing carrier is true.

If the brake shaft bearing is bad, you should be able to wobble the brake drum after removing the tin cover...

I broke one of those bearing carriers... no matter because the whole rearend was shot from a bearing going out and running through all the gears.

In a word yes. Do not pry that shaft retainer out. It has a flange that is behind the Bull gear. It will break (as many will attest) The bull gear can be removed from the axle through the PTO mounting hole. Then the axle can be moved to allow the gear to move rearward. This is done routinely to avoid taking off the top cover, but is usually quite a task. Taking the top cover off, then the bull gear and axle is far more direct in being able to see what you are doing. Putting a stethescope (or rubber tube in your ear) on the parts while jacked up and blocked. Might indicate which is making the noise. Be careful, and rotate by hand, not engine. Others may give more advice. JimN

None of you guys are telling me what I want to hear. This is all bad news. Somebody just say "piece 'O cake" :)

OK, I'll have to do more investigating and try to narrow it down. It sounds like I'm better of going in through the top if I need to get in there, since I don't have a good feel about how this will all work.

you will have to remove the bull gear from the axle before pulling the bull pinion carrier. you will either have to remove the top and go from there or reach thru the pto housing (after removing it) and take the cap bolt out of the end of the axle and remove the bull gear. you will have to pull axle housing out to finish this.
