While loosening the flange on the water pump pulley on my 450 Farmall it broke so I need to replace it.

The book says I need to remove the packing nut which is in the image above. It's the brass nut with six notches in it.

It's brass and very soft. I tried tapping on it and it won't move and I'm afraid to really whale on it.

I suppose I need to build a special wrench to turn this nut but before I do that does anyone have any experience with this thing.

Thanks.

I had the same problem with my 400. Bought it with a cracked flange. First I bought a new flange which was an ORG IH PART cost was $180 just for the flange. Could not get the packing nut off either. Checked out the cost of a new water pump from from dealer was $240. The rebuilt one has the flange but they have done away with the packing nut and the fan bolts direct to the front of the pump. No springs or spacers. Also you can get an aftermarket flange if you do get the nut off for $30. I was told by the dealer in litchfield mich. So check around.

This doesn't answer your question about the packing nut, but just for what it's worth, I broke the adjusting flange part of the pulley on my 650D(same setup as you have)....don't remember if I was loosening it or tightening it....but anyway, I did a little grinding to make a bevel on both peices where it cracked in half, carefully clamped both peices back together in a vice, and fired up the wire welder and welded them back together. Guess my welder didn't know it isn't supposed to be able to weld cast. After a little file work where the belt runs, I put it back on the tractor and it's been working good as new ever since.

Ouch,

I dunno Bob, think I'd soak 'er overnight with Liquid Wrench and get after it with the pipewrench.

Whenever I face a situation like this, I always tell myself, "It 'taint wortha darn the way it is and whatever I do, it 'taint gonna get any worse".

Hope ya get 'er,

Allan

HaHa Allan, I can make it worse! My saying is "I'll fix it or I'll make it so nobody can fix it"

OOps, I've always been able to get the nut loose with a pipe wrench.

I tried a pipe wrench a little bit but all it did was chew up the nut.
