I have the distributor housing clamped firmly to the bench. I can move the shaft all over the place. Up & down, side to side, everywhere. This machine was running when I pulled the distributor, I'm doing a basic tune-up because I just bought it. Was I just lucky? Should I take it to a shop and have them rebuild it? I can't believe that there is supposed to be this much play in the bearings or bushings.

There"s always some up/down play (or forward/rearward play when it"s installed on the engine), but side play is a very bad thing. Distributors are fairly easy to rebuild, but take it to a shop if you do not feel cofortable doing it yourself. I"d bet a million dollars the advance isn"t working correctly. There are kits avalible to convert to pointless electronic ignition, which will improve starting on cold days, and will be good for a tiny bit more horsepower.
