This is a 1968 IH 444, gas engine. It was running fine but quit while I was mowing a couple of days ago. It starts easy, revs up strong, and dies when I take my finger off the start button. Fuel is getting to the carburetor (electric fuel pump is working). I suspect ignition but I"m not sure how to diagnose this. Any ideas?

I had the same thing happen on a 560 gas last year. Apparently the power to the starter bypasses the bad resister and keeps the engine running as long as the starter is engaged.

I got the resistor off. I don"t see any specs written on it and my I&T manual doesn"t say anything about it. My VOM reads 14 ohms resistance. Does anyone know what it should read?. If it"s not that perhaps the circuit in the regulator that cuts it out has failed? How would I test that without screwing up the alternator.

14 ohms sounds high to me. Most ballast resistors are around 1-3 ohms maybe a little more

Sounds like a defective ballast resistor. Should be bewteen the ignition switch and the coil. Hal

Maybe a bad ballsat resistor, some of the newer old tractor where set up so the ballast resister was out of the system when starting so it will start with a hotter spark.
