I am having problems with oil getting on my clutch. I suspect its coming from the rear main seal.

When I split the tractor to replace the clutch, will I be able to replace the main seal, or do I have to remove the oil pan etc?

I need to get a manual for this cause I have no experience with this type of repair.

Thanks for any advice you guys have for me.

Hi Terry, is it engine oil or Hytran fluid that is leaking at the clutch inspection plate?

When I removed the inspection plate, the oil that ran out was very very black, so I am assuming that its engine oil. If it is hytran fluid, is there a seal that I can replace for that while the tractor is split?

Hi Terry, I don't have I&T shop service manual for 454 but have it for 684. 684 has basically the same engine with 4 cyl as to 3 cyl for 454.
According to I&T shop service manual to replace the rear main seal, split, remove flywheel and seal retainer noting position of seal. There are special instructions so buy a manual.
My brother's 684 had always leaked a little engine oil at the clutch inspection cover. It never got on the clutch pads as it leaked down behind the flywheel. So when we did a clutch job on it and had the flywheel off to be ground we noticed the main seal housing bolts were all loose. Tightened to spec and hasn't leaked a drop since. Hytran can also leak out of the PTO shaft seal.

Hope this helps
