Front Bolster Removal on M

Hey all,

I am planning to remove the front bolster and build a custom wide front on my M puller. I wanted to check with you guys and see if it is as easy as it looks.

Best I can tell, with the front sheet metal, steering shaft, and radiator removed the assembly should slide out when the 4 bolts on each side are removed. What I am worried about is how tight of a fit it is and if I am going to have to loosen all the frame bolts to get it to some out.

The reason I ask is because I was planning to tack weld my front weight bracket in place before removing the bolster because it will be the foundation for the new frame and front end. However, once welded, the frame rails will be one piece.

If it will slide out when the bolts are removed, I will just block up the front of the tractor and use a cherry picker to pull it out. If that is not gong to work and I have to loosen everything, I need to change my plan a little.

Lemme know what ya'll think.

Chris

From the sound of your description, I would recommend that there be two things considered. First, I would recommend the wheels be close together, as they are normally on a narrow front. This keeps the forces on the wheels from twisting the axle and forcing the steering. Second, I would recommend at least 2.5 to 3.5 turns from full left to full right. If there is less advantage the wheel will be too hard to turn. If more it may be too slow in correcting direction. These are not to try to convince you to stop, just avoid broken fingers. JimN

That is probably not a bad idea on the 2.5. That would mean more like a 8-10:1 ratio I think. If I use the rack setup, it will take care of the correct ratio. I will keep the axle to around 45-50 inches. It will be in line with the inside/center of the rear tire. I will also go by the look I am going for too. Since it is a puller, I will be on flat ground for the most part.

Thanks for the input,

Chris

Yeah, they fit tight, I'd guess you will have to take one side off.

You will find it hard to remove unless you loosen frame rail on one side. I think its easyer to remove radiator after bolster is off tractor. If tractor has solid engine mounts, about all do,the frame rails will be held in same or near same location as before.

You do know that your front wheels, whether NF or WFE, just unbolt and come off without doing all that, don't you? If so, the front bolster should slide out. I have had mine off, but do not remember if I had to loosen the other bolts, don't think so.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will plan on waiting to weld the front on until the bolster is out. I guess I will have to block up the tractor on the engine while working on it.

I do realize that I can unbolt the front wheels from the bolster, but I am actually removing the whole bolster and building new light weight steering setup with the wide front. I will be using a narrowed axle from a peanut trailer for the axle itself. I will use either a right angle 1:1 gear box with a rack and pinion setup or use a 4:1 box mounted up high and a long steering rod to go down to the axle. At this point I can not find the 4:1 box, so it is looking like the first option will be how I go.

I need to remove the bolster so I can move weight around. As it is now, I can't even get the front end in the air when pulling in 4th gear. It just blows the tires loose at this point. Plus, I will be able pull it at 4500lb or less if I want to after this.
