I have a 656 with 18.4 x 34 wheels, I am looking to go with at 15.5 x 38 or narrower tire. There is a 460 about 200 miles from where I live with a bad engine .. Some one had said the 460 rim will work on my tractor. My axle is 2 3/4 inches.. I checked a 460 the other day after I drove 120 miles but its 2 1/2 are all 460's the 2 /1/2 or where some axles larger????

Thanks Tom in Maine

Only the very early 460's (1968 models) had the small axles and even most of those were recalled and updated to the 2.75 axles. A few got overlooked on the axle update.

Tom: I notice you say Maine. Most 460s that have 2.75 axles are in the corn belt. Not exactly sure when the 2.75 axles that will fit 300, 350 and 460 were introduced, however it was a result of corn farmers breaking axles with mounted corn pickers. I am not even sure any 2.75 axles were ever installed in 300s or 350s, but if they will fit a 460 they will also fit the other two.

You will find most of those tractors with 2.75 axles are in the Mid West corn belt.

If your looking for wheels close to home, I'd suggest not over looking hy clear tractors. I once bought a set of 38 inch wheels for my 560. They came from a 504 Chisholm Ryder green bean harvester. I don't know if all hy clears used 2.75 axles but the tractors that went to Chisholm Ryder had the large axles.

Also, in the sugar beet growing areas, lots of the 350 tractors had the larger size, 2.75 inch axle. For pulling beet harvesters, and beet topper savers. They were an option I believe.
In our Wyoming and Montana areas anyway ...
Our LP gas 350 has the 2.5 inch long rear axle, and the gasoline 350 of ours has the 2.75 rear axle. The 2.75 center hub bolts take the larger wrench too, than the 2.5. Simple to slide in and out on these axles.
I like the larger one.

the rims will interchange even if the wheels do not.

All three 460s that we have are 2.75. Most of the ones I run across around here are also 2.75.

Better have it measured before you go. The optional axle for the 460 was 2.75 x either 39 or 45 inches long. Never seen one, mine has the 2.5.
