Timing Light

I have wanted to put a timing light on my 300u. Found one today at a rummage sale and bought it, but don't know if it works or will work.
It says "Niehoff T64 Timing Light" and has a positive, negative and a third wire on it.
Does anyone know: Is this a 6 or 12 volt timing light, or do they work for both? The third wire has a clamp on it and says use only over insulated wire, does this go over the #1 plug wire?
Thanks for reading, any help is appreciated.

Yes the clamp goes around # 1 plug wire. If your tractor has been changed to 12 volt - grnd then hook the other wires up conventionally. If you have a 6 volt + grnd hook the other wires to a 12 volt battery.

It's most likely a 12 volt. Yes, just clamp it to the #1 wire.

I don't use a timing light. It's more acurate to time it with the engine off. First, make sure the points are gapped exactly where you want them. Set the engine with #1 coming up on compression, then line up the timing mark where you want it to fire. Then put an ohm meter from the coil side of the points to ground and slowly rotate the distributor until the points break (Ohm meter goes to infinity) Lock her down right there and you are done.

That's a strange comment, for sure!

May be, but it is how you should time an old Farmall.

You won't find specifications for using a timing light, and there is no mark for dynamic timing.

Static timing works well just like the manual says except I don't use an ohm meter. I just twist the distributor back and forth and leave it where the points are just starting to open..

Right - the ohm meter just gives you a good indication of when the points actually break. You can also use a volt meter from the distributor side of the coil. You will read no voltage, but when the points break, it will read voltage.
