Took two one-way rams off a New Idea corn picker, to use on my 3pt. They each have threaded nuts on the shaft, for adjusting the travel length. They also have loose "collars" on the shaft which reduce the stroke to 3 and one half inches. How can I get these off? The end clevis is threaded on, and will come off easy, but does the adjusting nut thread on to the shaft also? If so,how do you hold the shaft, to unthread it, without damaging the shaft? SDE

If the adjusting nut is loose enough to adjust, it should be looser than the clevis. If it si not, I would pinch the shaft in a vice with sheets of 1/8" aluminum as buffers on the teeth. If still troublesome, set the nut on an anvil, and use a sharp cold chisel to put a serious groove in three of the flats of the nut. Skip a flat between each groove. Strike perpendicular to the shaft, not along it. The nut will swell and be free on the threads. JimN

The clevis attaches to a one inch diameter thread. About an inch toward the cylinder is a larger Diameter thread that the adjusting nut moves on. A snap ring prevents the nut from being rotated backward, off the clevis end. The shaft of the cyclinder is one inch and, how it attaches to the larger threaded dia is hidden under the big nut. I assume it is threaded also. But, does it thread over the thread the clevis attaches to, or does everything unscrew as a unit and then the clevis reinstalled on the ram and the adjusting nut discarded?

SDE, I have no personal knowledge of those rams. They did put it together however, thus it can be taken apart. I do know that the total ram travel is often much less than it appears to be capable of. The head bushing (where the cylinder rod goes in and out) must always be on the chrome polished part of the rod. Removing the nut by using a chisel may allow increased stroke. A picture is valuable. Someday I will get a camera and learn to post photos. The thread that this adjusting nut was on, had an internal thread and was screwed on to the end of the shaft. They came off rather easily, but I did not want to make a foolish mistake an wreck anything. Still living and learning. I hope to actually learn something that someone else may need to know. Thank you
