2" NPT i rethread them at work on a six foot radial arm drill press. it takes a lot of power to turn the tap in as deep as it should be. i have never broken a manifold yet doing this.

Often times they don't need to be rethreaded. The threads fill up with soot and rust and seem to disappear. If the manifold is off the tractor, take it to a machine shop and get the outlet sandblasted/glass-beaded. They will probably chase the threads for no additional cost. In any event, you should take the manifold off and replace the studs, washers, gaskets, and brass nuts.

If you do it yourself, you will degrade the 2" pipe tap (not cheap) as it is cutting through the hard oxides. You could even wind up with a cross-thread. I wouldn't let you borrow my tap. Sorry.

We answered at the same time, and you're right, it is tough. Best to have the manifold still mounted to the tractor, and even then you might move the tractor.

Uggh that sounds brutal. Break any manifolds when threading them ?
Need to do my tractor, might just get a new manifold for about $125 after reading that.

It only gets tough when you have to go deep enough to cut some new threads. Just cleaning up what is already there is only about half that tough, still a better option than an aftermarket manifold that may or may not fit.
