I lost my gearshift when shifting!

I was out in the field in 1st gear cutting field grass on my 1948 Farmall Cub, when I went to shift into reverse to back up. The gear shift didn't shift into reverse, so I tried again, and it came right out of the gearbox! So now my tractor is in neutral sitting in the middle of the field. I took the gearbox cover off to look inside, and I consulted my manual, but all I see diagramed in the service manual is how the tranmission gears themselves are supposed to be put together. The service manual only says: "25. Use a new gasket and install the gear shift assembly on the transmission case." Not much help to me. I need help! When looking inside the gear shift assembly, which I take to mean the cover plate, an "H" type piece of metal that doesn't move around inside too well, and the actual cone-type housing, I can't tell why it broke. The schematic diagram on page 6-3 of the Service Manual appears to show me what's there, but could I have lost some pieces from the gear shift assembly into the crankcase? I didn't see anything unusual in the crankcase itself, aside from the gears and oil. I don't know how to put it back together to get it working again-no documentation on how to do that and ensure its working properly. There doesn't appear to be replacement kits for the gear shift assembly on the web anywhere either-but I don't know why this came apart, so I don't know what to order to fix it or even how to!!! How frustrating is this! Has anyone out there ever had this happen to them? What's the remedy? I did put the cover back on and actually the entire assembly is put back together, it's just not connecting to the gears-it's not useable. I didn't want rainwater getting in there. Is there also some torque settings that need to be applied to the cover screws-nothing on that as well....Thanks in Advance, Dave

The link looks great! Pictures say it all! For some reason the guide went completely into the shift tower....I'll try to pull it out the recommended way and see if I can figure out how it'll sit back down on the gears inside. Wish me luck and thanks again! I hope this does the trick....and based on the documentation in the link, it appears I don't have to worry about any parts missing down in the transmission case either...Dave

The internet is loaded with info and yet this site decides what can and can't be linked.
