Hey guys,
I just looked into a 706 german diesel, narrow front, rear tires checked but fair(18.4x34's). It has a knock in the engine, possibly a rod bearing, injection pump needs rebuilt, had a hole punced in radiator, had the line pinched off by a radiator shop, tinwork fair, flat top fenders, needs batteries. Comes with a paulsen loader, with no bucket, and a wore out 3 point blade. He says scalper told him $2000....I say $750. What's your take? Thanks.

Hoss

Thanks guys, I was just checking, only problem is it is my great grandfather's tractor. He didn't buy it new or anything like that, but I just don't think I would have a positive equity situation regardless of sentimental value! I wasn't sure of the parts availabilty. I would almost be better off to retrofit a different engine and sell the 310. Thanks for the responses.

Hoss

I've overhauled two 756 D310's recently. If the block and head is good, the engine overhaul will run $1200 for parts and another $1200 for labor. If the cam bearings need to be replaced, figure another $300. because the replacements will need to be linebored when refitted. May as well figure another $2500 for the TA, clutch and pressure plate. Figure at least $500 for the injection pump. I nrecommend a out of frame overhaul. Marv

I'm afraid you won't get that one dirt cheap. Those engines are in pretty good demand for repowering gas tractors. Worst part is that you'll probably end up spending $10,000 by the time you do a full overhaul, radiator, and the injection pump, it will still need tires, and you won't even know what kind of shape the TA and hydraulic system is in. You could have just short of $20,000 into it all said and done.

The german diesel is a great engine. The only draw back is they cost a mint to over haul. When I worked a the dealership we had a combine with the 358 german diesel and a short block was over 5000.00 in 1997. They sound and pull good.

HossW Split the difference and fix-er-up. It will make you a good tractor and you will know what you have in it.
