Help Me Understand...Bearing Pre-load

Putting the left side axle assy. back on my 1486. Inside axle bearing failed, so I replaced all the bearings on the left side and cleaned the belly of the old gal out. So here I am, looking through the pages of my IH Chassis Service Manual, and it says that when setting the pre-load on the axle cap, you have to have the other side cap loose. Here is my question, WHY?

Am I overlooking something simple?

Tapered roller bearings run with axial load applied all the time. This load is a combination of the loads applied from the shaft they are controlling, and pre-load. Pre-load is applied by rotating adjusters, Crushing a special sleeve, removing or adding shims, or shim gaskets. The result is to put a partial load on the rollers even when there is no load on the shaft. Tapered roller bearings need as much as 2-to-5% of their rated max load used as pre-load to keep them aligned and the shaft located. The system load is measured in several ways some times with nut tightness on a shaft, sometimes by rotational force on the assembly, and sometimes by measurment and mathmatics. The only way a seperate preload could be involved is if the case was distorted by the loading of the first shaft. Not a best design situation, and not applicable to two axles on the tractor (my opinion) JimN

preload is after all the clearance has been removed (shake,movement,slack,)for every .001 after that you take out that's preload

Well here is what I am going to try, Ill take the measurements once with the other cap tight, then again with it loose, and see what the difference is. The only thing I can think of is if you were measuring rolling resistance, which you are not doing.

Erik I am with Chuck on this there is no relation between 1 axel and the other. Great big housing between them. As for the preload you will have to leave the shims out torque the end cap screws to what the book says then see how much clearence the is between the cap and housing with feeler gage then mach that cap to a shin pack.
