I had my magneto rebuilt some time ago; when it left here, it wouldn't run the tractor but it was quiet as a church mouse. When it came back it runs the tractor GREAT but there is a "twang" coming from the mag when it runs, reminiscent of the noise a screen door return spring makes only much higher frequency and kind of a pulse to it. Would suspect the impulse spring but I've had it apart and I cannot see where that is the case. Is there supposed to be a paper gasket between the aluminum casting and the distributor cap? Do you think I'm hurting anything by running it? Would appreciate any thoughts/comments/ideas. Thx, Joe Howard

Jon, The mag was rebuilt by a shadetree mechanic in Foley Alabama, but he sure knew his stuff. It is not intermittant, does it all the time. He put in a new coil and not sure what else but it is the same distributor cap that was on it; and I'm reasonably sure I have it clipped correctly.I have another J4 here and maybe tomorrow I can get aroung to putting it on and see if I can "move" the problem to a cub stationary engine I have. I'll post the results of this witch hunt. Thx, Joe Howard

Hi Joe, DID I rebuild that mag for you? No no gasket under the dist cap. When does it make the noise ? all the time? at idle? when cranking? I mean a trip does sound something like that I guess when it supposed to trip. I have heard of some mags that get rebuilt with aftermarket caps and they are not right and break the rotor becuase they do not hit right. Is your rotor setting down in position right its hard to tell. But if there was to much grease under it and they could not tighten it down it may be to high causing problems on the cap. Or maybe it has the wrong trip or installed wrong or came apart underneath where the little clips hold the pawls in. You will not be able to see those unless you take the trip off with a puller. Email me or give some more information. JON
