Over the weekend, I backed the planter and 986 out of the shed. I noticed that when I started the tractor it kind of hesitated before starting. When I got ready to put it away it would not start. Put the battery charger on and jumper cables and still nothing. I can hear the relay click on an off inside the cab so I know that is not the problem. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

Thanks for the ideas. I too would bet that it is one of the neutral safety switches. I think that on this tractor one switch must already be bad since you do not have to depress the clutch to start. Once again thanks for the assistance.

If it is the neutral saftey switch, it has two one is under the cab on the gearshift linkage in the park position ( this one lets you start it w/o pushing the clutch)the other one is mounted through the firewall under the clutch pedal (all the wires are under the hood and behind the engine) it has most likely had the back pushed out from miss adjustment/and or dirt. If you find this the problem replace the switch DON'T HOT WIRE IT

what you are hearing is the cab CV relay , this is not your problem i would bet the farm that it is the clutch safty switch Find the switch that the clutch makes contact with and that is more then likely the problem . Now if that is not it then i would be looken at the starter selinoid .

Check all connections on battery to starter circuits [heavy cables]. Don't assume that a connection is good because it is tight or looks good. Our 1066 had this problem also. Turned out the cable from the battery to the starter soleniod had eaten out inside of the hole where it went on the solenoid main lug. Cleaned it up, & reinstalled it & have had no further problems.

A corroded connection somewhere ? An open battery ?
What voltagwe does the battery read ? Have someone measure it while trying to crank it. On a friends tractor the voltage was good in the battery, but dropped to 2 volts when attempting to crank. Replaced battery and all was fine.
