I have a 1954 IH 300 backfiring and discovered that a 1 push rod looks like an "S" Anyone know if this could of caused any major damage to anything (lifter) Any idea who has one. Should I just replace it and hope for the best???

Mark: I wouldn't get too hung up on the cause, it happens from time to time and I've had it happen on relatively new tractors. Just straighten or replace and make sure that particular valve and rocker arm are moving freely. It could be a bit of rust, and you may find no visable cause.

In my many year with tractors, I've had about 5 push rods bend, and it wasn't always 50 year old tractors. Had it happen to a 1066 with 20 hours on meter, 656 with roughly 2,000 hours. The others I remember were older.

I agree with rusty, Probly had a little rust or stuck valve from sitting and bent the push rod just get another from a junk yard or ebay and clean her up and throw her in and check the gap and make sure the nut is good and tight so it does not loosen and adjust itself on ya. JON

Pretty tough job to damage the lifters, don't worry about it. You might want to try straightening the pushrod. Lay it down on a FLAT, clean surface, and get out your hammer. I've straightened a few this way, and they stayed straight.
