Adam, some of those voltmeters dont have very much/good resolution, but I would still expect it to rise from the battery voltage setting not running of 12.6 volts to near 14 when running wide open and the lights should glow noticeably brighter form setting to wide open running IFFFFF FFF its charging. Is there still an ammeter that works you can wire in??? If so the alternators main output (assuming thats what the kit uses???) wires to the ammeters Load side, same place the BAT terminal on a VR or Cutout relay used to wire, and its other supply side wires to the battery/starter maybe at the starter switch or solenoid where the big battery cable attaches. Is it a one wire or a 3 wire alternator?? If a 3 wire it needs excitaion voltage supplied on its lil side No. 1 terminal and if a one wire it may still need flashed before it kicks in.

The only way to tell if its charging is if the battery voltage rises from its normal 12.6 volts and/or the ammeter shows a charge and/or the lights glow brighter at Rpm.

Place the leads from a volt meter across the battery terminals and with the engine at 3/4 throttle look to see what your battery charging voltage is. Should be around 14.5 volts. Hal

Yes and no. Maybe.
A properly charged battery with a alternator will show nothing on the amp meter when running. The voltage control is so precise that the battery usually stays near perfect charge. Using lights will not change this at all because the lights are drawing power before the amp meter.

Here is how to check. If you place a volt meter across the battery terminals +to+ -to- and run the tractor, it should read 14.4 to 14.6 volts that is good. If it reads 12.5 to 12.8 volts (or less) it is not charging. John T trouble shooting in the archives is a great place to start. as are Bob M wiring diagrams. Good luck JimN
