As much as I like the old 60 series, I have to admit that I think that the British-built utilities are a much better utility tractor. The 239 engine in the 574 will last more than twice as long as the gas in your 460, and it will burn a little less fuel. If the 574 is equipped with a TA, it will be the hydraulic TA, which does not freewheel downhill. The 574 has a much better hydraulic system. The 574 probably has a real 3-point hitch. Best of all, the 574 should have both the 540 and 1000 RPM PTO shafts.

No, it's a German-built IH diesel. Those engines were found in most if not all of the IH/Case-IH British built utilities that were shipped to the U.S., from the old 574 up until the last ones about 10 years ago, as well as in many of the big U.S. built 06-88 series tractors. The smaller ones had a bore and stroke of 3.875"x4.30" and came as a 155 cubic inch three cylinder, a 206 cubic inch four cylinder, or a 310 cubic inch six cylinder. The 3.875"x5.062" version was a little more common, with a 179 three cylinder, 239 four cylinder, and a 358 six cylinder. I've put many, many hours on both of the sixes. I'm not too familiar with the older (pre 74 series) British utilities, but I'm fairly sure that the 414, 424, 434, and 444 family is totally different from the 574 and newer/bigger models.

Hi catmandoo, 574 has a German build D239 engine and British built rear end, same as 674 and 684 but pump is turned down to 52 HP but can be turned up to 65 HP.
The worst thing about those models is the parking brake idiot light stops working and someone drives the tractor with the parking brake on and the parking brake is a band around a drum in the rear end. The end result is that chewed up parking brake bits get in the hydraulic system and clog the filters.

So check parking brake for holding power. If it holds good then no one has destroyed the band.

My 2 cents

Hi catmandoo, Re replacing the parking brake band:
My brother's 684 has the same problem, he asked a former IH mechanic about replacing the band and here is his answer: It is not worth replacing the band without replacing the drum as the drum will be scored and the new band will not hold. To replace drum requires many $$ splitting tractor at rear and taking top off where seat and 3 pt hitch sit on transmission.
His simple solution is to buy all thread bolt with eye on end, drill a hole on floor board and mount bolt so eye of bolt comes up between brake pedals. To park tractor press brakes down and put a pin thru the eye to hold brakes on.

Works great.

Replacing the brake band is the job from hell, but I know of a guy thet said he could do it through the pto inspection plate. When you have done it you will have a hand brake that is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. The 574 will have 540 and 1000 pto there are 2 shafts at the back, top one is 1000rpm. The engine is german on all the Doncaster built tractors exept the 475 which has a Perkins A4.212 (same as the M-F 165 Mk2) The Bradford built tractors (B250,275,414,434 and 374 etc) have a Bradford built engine
