I just installed electrical ignition on my SC and it was very easy and seems to work great. I was thinking of doing this to 3 more tractors that I have. (SA, H, 400) Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with doing so? Any other comments are welcomed. Thanks Del

Did you have to adjust the timing or just bolt in, wire up and go? Thanks Pat in Wis

I didn't adjust the timing, I just put it in and put on a new coil and bamm! aways she goes! The instructions say to check the timing.
It's almost scary how fast it starts.

I have converted 2 of my tractors, the ones Iuse the most. I don't see the problem with reliability. We have used electronic ignition on cars for years and it has worked out well, why not on tractors? Points and condensor are no longer that cheap, about 20 to 25 per set, the electronic ignition is around 100 or 4 changes, best part is there is no adjustment, it stays right. The same 2 tractors are also converted to 12 volts. They are users and I run at night at times, I also run a baler at night and don't like the prospect of tryig to find that many 6 volt lights. I use them in the winter and with the 12 volts they start quickly. I don't "cobble" up my tractors or equipment but if something works, at least for me, better than the original I go with it.

Del, I believe in having original factory equipment as much as the next guy, but speaking purely from a performance standpoint (especially if youre gonna use it more then show it) the electronic ignition is farrrrr rrr superior. I always highly recommend any electronic switch be coupled up with a high energy coil also to get the most bang for the buck and enhanced performance the electronic switch has to offer. The electronic switch uses a solid state device to switch coil current eliminating the problems associated with mechanical point bouncing and ringing yielding a more positive and faster switch without the associated problems of burning and carbon (voltage dropping resistance) and condensors going bad. One limiting factor in the points ignition is the amount of current the coil can conduct and the points have to switch (around 4 amps or so) to avoid premature burn up but using an electronic switch and a high energy coil its theoretically possible to pump more current through a coil and to store more energy which gets expended in part across the plugs gap in the form of Volts x Amps x Time for a hotter higher energy spark to better ignite the fuel. Points begin to deteriorate the minute they are used while an elec switch (if good) deteriorates little with age.

There are advantages to the points in that a simple clean up and/or regap may get her running and back home while if an elec switch craps out YOURE SCREWED LOL, plus the points n condensor are much cheaper (initially at least).

Pay your money n make your choices, its your tractor n no one elses business how you wish to equip it I figure.

John, the electronic's reliability is what worries me. I've wondered about changing mine over but figured I'd have to buy 2 electronics for every tractor. What are you or anyone else's experience with the reliability aspect?
