Hello all. Friend & I are assembling a Super M back together. I have a few questions. First we turned the engine over to prime the oil system. Oil cam up through the rocker shaft just fine. I noticed no oil came up through either of the two feeder holes for the cross over tube. I'm assuming the engine needs more RPM than the starter can provide to push oil through, am I correct?

Also, what is the purpose of that cross over tube. It has one small hole drilled into the tube just above the exhaust rocker for No. #1 cylinder. It has me thinking this is an oil feeder for the rocker/valve area?

Last, can we have the generator rebuilt to 12v specs? If not what might work in it's place other than those Delco conversion alternators? We want to keep it stock looking. Is there a 12v regulator made? Thanks for any help.

Ahh a breather tube? That explains it then(embarrassed). Thanks, the service manual says nothing about it. In fact the service info seems limited in many ways. Dennis thanks for the generator info. I seem to remember hearing about using one off a number series tractor.

About any General Motors generator from 1955 until they started using alternators will bolt in but not have the right shaft for the adjustable sheave. They will work, though.

The tube that you're refering to is the breather tube. No oil comes through it. If you are getting oil to rocker arms then you should be good to go. I believe some rebuilders can change the 6V generator to 12V. Or you could find a Delco 12V generator, it will fit in place of the origonal 6V.

I can't answer the question about the oil, but on my super mI used a 12 volt generator for a 560. Same with the regulator. Dennis
