48 H goes missing and quits, HELP!

I have a 48 Farmall H. As of late when I bush hog (3/4 throttle) using a Woods Cutter, after 30 minutes to an hour it will start hunting (missing)sporadically and eventually quits. After it sits for a couple of minutes it will start and run (1/4 throttle) until I can get it back to the barn. I have checked the tank for debris, cleaned the screen, replaced the fuel line, rebuilt the carb. Any suggestions? Thank you, in advance...

My H would do the same thing. Took of carb, clean as it can be, Checked mag, good clean points, hot blue fire, looked in tank, LOOKED clean as can be. Took off fuel bowl, OK, a little rust here, Drained all the fuel out of tank, was slow drain, OK, I got a clue, took off tank, got over half a gallon of rust and dirt out of the tank, cleaned, etched, sealed the tank. Problem solved.
The thing to keep in mind, when an engine is surging, 95% of the time, it is a fuel problem. When it surges, basically the engine is running good, runs out fo gas, then gets more, then runs out, then gets more, henceforth, the reason it goes up and down, the tractor is dying and then rstarting itself, but doing it fast enough not to completely quit. Good luck.

No I'm not... I have owned this H for about a year and a half. I grew up with the Super A, H, and M. My dad still has a Super A (with quick hitch) that he purchased for $600 (with attachments) in 1966.

Was it properly converted to 12-Volts, either by adding a ballast resistor ahead of the 6-Volt coil, or by installing a true 12-Volt coil?

Your symptoms are EXACTLY those of a failed coil that breaks down when it gets HOT, probably because of the lack of a ballast resistor of adequate resistance.

I checked the ballast resister and found a break. I put an ohm meter to it and was not getting any continuity reading. I am changing it this weekend. Hopefully that will fix it. Thanks...

Make sure you check the fuel cap vent is clear. Also when the engine starts missing, have you tried to keep it running by pulling out the choke? If the engine runs better with the choke pulled out then its a fuel problem. Otherwise, its probably a electrical.

Make sure you are getting a good flow of fuel to the carburetor. You could have weak coil too. Hal

When it does that stop and check that you have a good brite blue spark and also that you have a good flow of gas from the drain at the bottom of the carb. You also might try a hot wire from the battery to the coil to make sure its not a bad switch or ballast resistor if you have one

Sounds like ignition. Replace the points, condensor, rotor and distributor cap.
