Before you pull the cam, rotate the engine until
the timing marks are in the correct order, then do not move the engine until you have the new cam installed. Hal

Make sure you get the nut that retains the timing gear when you buy the cam. The threads are left hand on a 450 cam and right hand on an M.

You can change the cam shaft without revoving the block. Remove front pedistal and radiator. Remove front pulley and front cover. Remove camshaft gear. There is a reatainer behind it. If you remove side plate on rh side of engine you can keep lifters up. I think when I did it I removed the rocker arm and push rods. It is always good to change lifters when you do a cam shaft, especially a new or re ground cam shaft. Also use some Lubriplate or similar on cam lobes when reinstalled. I have been told that most of he wear to a new cam shaft is done within the first few minutes of operation.

If you have live hydraulics and the 450 gear will fit use it. Otherwise M gear should be fine if in good shape.

450 gears on an M in reply to Hayfarmer, 07-13-2006 19:35:14
Kewl! I didn't know that 450 timing gears would fit on an M. Makes sense, though.
