I would like your opinion on the a gear in my H transmission. (the gear that the 4th and 5th slider goes into for 5th gear) How badly is it worn? Does it need replacing? Is it contributing to my 5th gear problem? Thanks Nick

Difficult to see in the picture, but it looks like from the second picture you posted that the internal splines on the sliding gear are about gone. The sliding gear with the female splines is the one that wears out. The input gear looks ok to me.

the beed things are bubbles. (light reflections) The oild doesn't look that bad it is the picture. But it does need to be changed. The shifter does only move about a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Here is a picture of the gears Engaged. Are they engaging all the way? I have put the tractor in 5th and roled it forward and saw the gears slip out and back in. ("walk out" I supose)
thanks Nick

As pointed out, the wear on the spline ends doesn't look horrible, however, the mating female splines may be worn more. If your tractor was jumping out of gear, I'll bet the shifter knob only moved about 1/2 inch or so between jumping out, and being as far in as it can move. If so this is an indication of worn teeth, and or a shift fork worn, or bent not inserting the splines into full engagement. If the load side wear on the splines (shown) is very flat, and not tapering off into a slight angle, and the same is true of the female splines, and the spline wear pattern is showing 3/16" of engagement, the only thing that would cause jumping out would be poor shaft alignment allowing the splines to "walk" out of engagement. Good luck, I hope this helps. We just don't have xray vision to see it when it is assembled and going down the road.
What are the colored beads in the trans, wierd reflections from light? JimN

The driving gear don't look too bad. But I suspect the driven sliding gear is worse and that is what is kicking it out of 5th. I would change both gears, check the pilot bearing. Then change that rusty looking oil too.
