Hard Starting Diesel 340

Lately I've been having trouble starting my diesel 340. I thought it might be the glow plugs but they all check out ok. So I then checked the fuel delivery to see if maybe it lost prime from sitting. I changed the fuel filter and reprimed the fuel system. Still wouldn't start. So I drained the fuel tank and put in fresh diesel and reprimed again. This time it started right up. I figured that the fuel must have gone bad. But now a week later it won't start again. It has always started right up and ran fine. I don't understand why all of sudden it won't start especially with fresh fuel and filter. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing the hard starting?

Mydeere: I've read all this thread, and my thoughts are you have a very small suction air leak. Sometime these are very hard to find. First thing I'd look for is cracked steel lines or fittings.

I base this on the fact it started after you primed it. I know you primed it once with the old fuel, don't let this trick you into thinking old fuel is the problem.

Thank you guys for the replys. I will check the hose that runs from the fuel filter to the injector pump. The other day when I was working on it I noticed that the outer jacket of the hose was cracked at one of the fittings. Perhaps the inner portion of the fuel line has a small crack as well and is allowing air to enter. I would think that if I reprime it and it starts maybe this could be the culprit.

What is coming out the exhaust stack when you are cranking?

1 - If it's white the engine is getting fuel but it's not igniting. Causes could be too slow cranking speed, non-working glow plugs or low compression (worn valves, etc.)

2 - However if the exhaust is clear it means the engine is not getting fuel. Look for the injection pump losing prime when shut down (on account of a suction side air leak or bad check valve), a failing primary (lift) fuel pump, plugged filters, stop knob not pushed in all the way, etc.

The fact the engine started after you reprimed makes me think the problem is something in #2...

Old or fresh fuel should make no difference. Except in extreme conditions of heat/humidity it takes a long time (many years) for diesel to "go bad"!

BobM it has a slight trace of what looks like a light blue/gray smoke coming from the exhaust when cranking. I would tend to agree that it may be unignited fuel but there is not alot of it as if you were trying to start a diesel in say the winter when its cold out and you have to crank it for a while.

When cranking, if the engine's being properly fueled but is not firing you should see an abundant, gray/white "fog" out the stack.

Once again it sounds to me like you're dealing with a fueling problem - most likely loss of prime during shutdown.

Good batteries & good compression are key to starting diesels.

better yet, a crank start gas tractor, a log chain, and a second person. why havent they invented something more reliable than electric starters yet?

karl: They have and it's called an air starter. They are used quite extensively in the north on diesel trucks and construction equipment. The down side is equipment must be equiped with an air compressor, and no leaks. During down times most of that equipment is lined up at an central air station.

It has it's down side as well, moisture in the air lines in cold weather. Also when you run out of air, not a lot different than running out of battery.

It has a new battery and plenty of compression. The starter is spinning the motor over plenty fast enough for it to start also. The tractor is a very low hour machine with about 2200 hours on it and in exceptionally good shape for its age. It normally starts and runs like a top with plenty of power. Thats why this episode of hard starting baffels me.
