Baling hay with the 560 this weekend when it suddenly cranked hard to the right all on it's own. Found that the splines are totally stripped out of the frontmost yoke on the steering shaft, and that the splines on the shaft going into the bolster look pretty bad as well. Noticed that there was a roll pin going through the yoke and shaft, which is now broken. I'm guessing that the splines stripped out a long time ago and someone drilled the shaft and yoke for a roll pin as a quick fix, as none of my parts diagrams show a roll pin in this location. Reading through the manual, it looks like you'd pretty much have to remove and disassemble the whole bolster to replace the shaft, if you can even get a new shaft. Has anyone run into this problem before? Is putting another roll pin in there an acceptable fix? How about a 1/4" grade 8 bolt instead of a roll pin? Seems to me this would have been deadly had it happened going down the road. Saftey is my #1 priority, but I'd like to avoid tearing down the whole front end if possible.

Yep that is one way or if ya can find and want to do it pull it apart and have the shaft spray welded . we use to do this to big dozers way back whe Hector was a pup and he died 35 years ago . Yours is not the first that i have seen with a double roll pin thru it or a hard bolt . Not the best of fixes . As far as a new shaft don't know if ya can get one and i would bet the farm that the price would vapor loc ya .No mercy on the poor guy.

KB Some guys on here aren't going to want to here this buttttt .

Can you get it all lined up where it belongs put the bolt in and weld the couplers.

Shaft is already shot so you can't hurt it and if you ever have to remove it you just use a differant type of wrench to remove it."a torch"

The steer arms on wide fronts have wallered out before and rather than spend the money for new arms and spindles the farmers would have us weld them at the weld shop.

We would put in new thrust bearings and bushings before welding so it didn't have to come back to cut off to replace those right away.

Now they manufacture under sized steer arms for them.

Never came loose or broke a welded one.

Maybe theres no room for weld, I'm not familiar with the amount of clearance you have.
