I'm looking into the points, plugs, etc. and notice that the cap is marked with a 1 by the manufacturer. That's fine but it is coming from number 2 plug. At first I thought this must be an Essex Tri-Directional that I've read so much about. After looking futher I see that the distributor has been twisted far enough to make the motor run (and run well) with the wires on the wrong towers of the cap.
The question is; do I fix this or leave it alone since it runs now anyway? This is a working girl not a restoration but I'm trying to keep it right if I can.
Why would someone have done this?

Rob: Sounds as though a real genius did mechanic work on your tractor at one time, might have even been the design engineer of the Essex.

My thoughts are someone had the distributor out and reinstalled it off 90 degrees on the drive. It really doesn't matter what position the distributor is in, it will work fine as long as the firing order is correct and timing advance is set right.

You might have a culpert around like my dad caught one night. Dad always parked his 3 tractors right across drivway from house in haying time. One morning the 130 started but backfired and missed terrible. Of course first thing he took off was plug wires and cap. Being careful putting them back, he didn't realize tractor had been tampered with. Next morning, same thing, this time he looked, number 2 and 3 wire were crossed. Third morning, same thing. Ah, but the 4th night dad slept on a cot on the deck. About midnight he heard a comotion down by tractors. He tip toed down and caught the inovative young lad in the act of changing wires. I don't know what he did, but the howls coming out of that lad woke everyone in the house. I think he wacked him right across knuckles with a 1x2 hardwood stick. I'll bet he never disturbed tractor plug wires again.

That's up to you. Timing is easy to set, I prefer to have mine wired the right way. The person had no manual, and no clue as to what he was doing, or perhaps he thought he knew it all.
