C problems

I have a 1949 C with issues. I believe all of the issues are electical. The tractor has a 12 v generator, 6 volt battery (not hooked up), and a converted magneto. The tractor starts easy when jumped off, runs for about 45 minutes and dies. It will then restart easily and run 10-15 minutes and die again. Anyone have this same issue? I think it may be time for a rewire and full 12v conversion.

Thanks in advance.

Since your tractor has a magneto, your generator, battery and starter are only used to crank the engine unless someone has installed an external coil. When the engine quits running pull the coil wire from the cap and hold the coil wire within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground, then have someone crank the engine using the starter. Do this as soon as the engine quits before it cools. No fire or very weak fire the coil probably needs replacing. If you have a hot blue spark you probably have a fuel blockage. Hal

Here is a cheap ignition tester

From an electronics store (Radioshack) buy an NE-2 Neon bulb (very cheap) put flexible wires on it that are about 6ft long (Lamp zip cord twinlead is great)
put the lamp and end of the wire in a rubber tube so it is recessed about a half inch down the tube. put an alligator clip on one of the leads, and leave the other one unfinished.

To use it ground the alligator clip on bare metal near the engine. wrap 10 turns of the unfinished end around the coil wire like a spring, with even windings,(or a sparkplug wire if you suspect a single cylinder of malfunction), and tape it in place. I like to keep the wrap on a spare coil wire to ease installation.
Take the rubber business end up to the operators platform. When running the tractor, the bulb will flash once for each cylinder. When ideling it will be visible flashing, when at full throttle it will appear to be on all the time. If the ignition fails, the bulb will be very dim, or it will go out entirely. Good luck, let us know what you find, JimN

One of my BN's is doing the same thing, but runs less time than yours(5 minutes or so). I'm going to repair or replace the sediment bowel first. If that doesn't fix it I'm going to replace the coil. Good luck with your's. Dave.

Sounds like it could be a coil going bad on you.
