I wonder if I might gets some suggestions from some experts out there, Any help would be appreciated....

Here goes, I'll try to keep it short.

After 9 years of mowing with my 42 farmall H with no problems, she decides not to start this week.
Gas is now leaking from the air filter tube running from the carb to the air cleaner.
Time for a tune up? Changed plugs, cap and rotor, set new points at .020. No help. Disassembled carburetor and cleaned everything, checked float for holes, checked gas flow to carb,Checked needle valve function, cleaned fuel filter screen. Plugs are sparking, but dry after trying to start. I have not moved any of the adjustment screws on the carb, as it ran fine last week. I am about out of ideas, without starting to guess.

Anyone have any ideas what to try next.

Thanks in advance, Roger B. Near Cincinnati

Alright, I cannot tell a lie to you good people, I goofed on this one.

Although I don't know why the old H would not start in the first place, After a tune up and thorough carburetor cleaning, (and many other things) and float adjustment, timing check, best I could anyway, and 6 or 8 hrs. kinda wasted, It started right up, uhhhh, well you know, uhhh, fired right up I'm talkin'..... .....

AFTER I PUT THE PLUG WIRES BACK ON THE DISTRIBUTOR IN THE RIGHT ORDER.....

Sorry, I'm so embarassed.

Thanks to all, what a good forum.

To reply to the replys, Dave BN, yes it was running fine last week, the air cleaner is free of obstuctions, I think it made one final POOF through the muffler before it died, I haven't checked the timimg yet, but hadn't thought about jumping time, THANKS

Gordo SD, I checked and adjusted the float tonight but ran short on time, and didn't try to start it as is was 10:30pm here and time to close up shop. The needle valve was cutting off the gas flow when I was testing it manually. I did lightly tap then needle just in case. Also, I do always shut the gas off. Thank you for your input.

Jossette, I did check the choke function, and it is working properly, Thank you for the advise.

I will let you now if the float adjustment works tomorrow, if not I'll look into the timing.

Thanks to you all, your time and input is very much appreciated.

Did the choke rod come off or adjusted wrong. Sometimes they vibrate loose and stay loose????

That fuel you saw dripping from the caarb inlet hose was a result of the float needle valve not sealing. Fuel overflowed there and also into the engine via the governor. Check your engine oil it is probably diluted. Redo the carb float and needle and seat that needle by giving it a very very light tap. Suggest you get a new one. If after cranking for a few times and those plugs are still dry, you have the float assembly afu and it won't allow any fuel to pass. You are on the right track here. In the future, ALWAYS-ALWAYS-ALWAYS shut off the fuel at the strainer bowl.

Did it run good until you stopped it last time? Can you hand crank it? If so, turn it over to see if all 4 cylindars have good compression. Or, maybe it jumped time. Make sure the rotor is pointing to #1 plug wire when you think #1 should be firing. This could explain why the pluggs are dry yet it wont run. Did a critter plug up the air cleaner with his new home? Does it fire at all, maybe poof poof thru the muffler? Let us know, we'll be glad to help. Dave.
