400 gas to diesel conversion

Can a diesel engine from a 400 be swapped into a 400 gas frame and will it work? I have a 400 gas with a bad motor and a chance to get a rebuilt 400 diesel to swap into it, for a very reasonable price. Also have a 450 carcass to get throttle linkage and various other parts that might fit for this swap.Time is not a factor, not critical to get this done, just wanting to pick the brains of people here to get a handle on "will it work".

Looked at the 400 power unit today, does not look like a swap into the gas frame will work without a major amount of work and fabrication, so this prtoject is a no-go as far as I am concerned. Thanks for all the replies and info.

If the 450 is a diesel and has the parts you should get it done okay. The clutch housing, front bolster, steering shafts are the same. Be best to use the frame rails from a diesel that have mounting holes for front engine support and dimples for clearance in places. Even though the center fuel tank and steering support is the same casting the diesel throttle linkage has a bigger hole in turncrank on left side for rod.You can drill the gas to size.you need air cleaner, start tank ,brakets and pipe.Notches at hand throttle lever different.Hydraulic lines from reservior to pump different.2 different Fuel tanks used for 400 diesel, one for type A pump and one for B type.Left and right hood sides different.Linkage, fuel lines, electical, different starter, tach and other odds and ends. Most times the switching is from Diesel to gas. Also if diesel engine has no Hydraulic pump or Distributor cost is going to add up.Just my opinion, but if you want to use engine find a cheap 400 diesel with a bad engine and put engine in it.

The 400 diesel is a power unit, not in a tractor, and has the starter, distributor, and gasoline tank. There is no diesel tank, and probably no hyd pump either. Diesel starts on gas, runs well, and shifts to diesel from a 25 gal barrel on the trailer the engine is mounted on.Runs on diesel after changeover, so is a complete running unit. I'm not sure how to put a hyd pump on this motor, or if it can be done. I will check out the diesel again in the am, see just what is or is not there, and decide based on comments here and condition of motor. Just may have to let this one go.

In last post I failed to point out that the hand starting ratchet part that contacts front of crankshaft is longer when used in a bolster with a gas engine. Since diesel engine is longer.if gas bolster is used the ratchet has to be shortend, removed or changed to diesel one. Fan shrould, coolant pipe are different also.

Just checked the 450 carcass, there is a hyd pump, but no distributor. Front bolster is complete and intact, air in both tires, too. But no fuel tank. Still needs some cogitating. Head is missing, don't need it.Air cleaner is there and complete. Should be able to figure something out, if I pull the bell housing off the 400 power unit, will it mate up with the clutch housing/ta housing on the 400 gas? Just asking ????s Trying to visualize in my mind what could/should/might work. Thing is, the owner of the 400 diesel only wants $500.00 for the motor and the trailer it sits on. Hard to go wrong at that price. And he claims only 30-35 hours on a complete rebuild. Cogitate some more, sure would be a nice rig if it can be made to work

I agree if engine and head are good on power unit thats a good buy. Without seeing how the power unit is set up can't say for sure what needs changed, but if you have a 450 farmall diesel engine from head down all parts on front and rear of engine if needed to mount in farmall chassis should be there. The distributor or mag from power unit should work with hydraulic pump.
Intake manifolds have a switch on front to kill power to coil if dist.is used, or to ground a mag.
Just use correct setup for each one.

Frame rails are longer, not sure about the bell housing mating up. Also the motor mounts are probably different, and you would need a starting gas tank. If the person with the motor has these things, buy the whole tractor or forget it(IMHO) Geoff NY
