This may be a stupid question but does anybody know of a way to check to see if the TA is good in a tractor with a stuck engine?

Realy there is no good way on a dead tractor to be 100% sure . Best way to buy it is that it is out and the engine is junk . Then take it home and start at the raditor cap and end at the PTO I have over the years bought DEAD tractors and sometimes you get the elevator and sometimes ya get the shaft. Let just say it can be a learning experance . Tools needed - spliting stands cherry picker jack stands and a BIG TOOL BOX . If ya feel FROGGY THEN LEAP ON IT. When done you will Know what ya got and a good learning experance. But only pay for what your buying JUNK . There are times to cut and run and look for a better buy.

Wild thinking on my part. I have not been around a 560 so if it has a hydraulic actuated TA this answer is void.

Put the unit in 4th gear clutch not pushed in. Use a Pickup truck with an automatic trans. Use a tow strap (and two people who know each other and can be safe pulling on vehicles) to pull strongly on the tractor backwards. This tension (you won't be able to pull the tractor unless it is a mighty tough truck) will put forward (normal) direction torque on the system, but no more than would be applied by a running tractor engine. Pulling back the TA, and putting it forward should allow either no, or just slight rearward movement, but no slippage. Be careful this should be safe and result in no more than a foot of movement. You are not trying to free the engine. Good luck, JimN

Whoooie,

Boy, I dunno unless you could come in from the top cover and somehow turn that planet sun shaft. The T/A lever would have to be pulled back and the main clutch pushed to see if ya could rock the tires any at all.

Hope ol' Vet comes in here on this one; he'll know.

Allan
