On a Delco 1 wire setup or 3 wire setup; would it hurt anything to disconnect the negative battery cable while the tractor running to see if the alternator is working? It is set up as negative ground.

Thanks in advance.

Most all makers of alternators caution against doing that because the resulting voltage surge MAY damage the alternator's diode(s) or electronic voltage regulator.

You may do it once, or 50 times, and get by with it, but sooner or later, you will be sorry when you let all the smoke out of the alternator.

You can get a hand-held ANALOG voltmeter of adequate quality for $10.00 to $20.00, so why temp fate, and risk burning out the alternator?

You are looking for charging voltage in the range of 13.5 to about 14.5 Volts, or dlightly more.

A voltmeter would be a lot easier.

Thats a yes no or maybe. Yes it can be done, but if left off to long you can burn up the alternator. So you see why I say yes, no and maybe. And yes thats the poor mans way of checking to see if it is chargeing
