I have been told by an electrical expert that when converting the older farmalls over from 6 volt to 12 volt, that the starter motor should be redone to better handle the additional voltage. I haven't been able to find any posting that mentioned this requirement when converting to 12 volts. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I just resently purchased a 230 and am in the process of working through the tractor fixing problems (stuck starter for one)to try and get it to run properly. I'm learning as I go and you all have been lots of help in the past.

thanks for all of the replies - just as I thought. I did need to get the starter rebuilt (not cheap by the way)and rewound...now on to getting the timing and carburation set.

Don't waste your money. I have an H that I got out of time. Cranked it for long periods of time over several days with a 12 volt, with no detrimental effects. I did keep my cranking periods short, but you do that with any starter.

No need in spending money on a 6 volt starter and changeing it to 12 volt, they work well on 12 volts and will last for years. Shoot I have some 20 plus tractors and most are 12 volt and all of them still have 6 volt starters on them and I have been useing some of them for more then 20 years and never have had any problems with the starters

Frank, The answer is YES and NO. I havent bothered to change to 12 volt starters (nor had them rewound) when I converted from 6 to 12 volts and never really had any problems but its still best to avoid longgggg gg periods of cranking. The NO part is it can be a lil tough (on some tractor starter combinations) on the starter drive mechanism (the Bendix) due the the much higher kick in torque when you put 12 volts on a 6 volt starter. Thats why on 6 to 12 volt conversions and unlike my usualy "bigger is better" battery advice, I dont necessarly recommend a super heavy duty high CCA 12 volt battery on a 6 to 12 conversion.

If your starter is working OK, there is no need to change anything, it will work just fine for many years on 12 volts.

There are many, many tractors out there with 12 volts on the original 6 volt starters.

If your starter is getting a rewind anyway(you said it is stuck), Then you may as well have it wound for 12 volts.
