Getting ready to order my H engine overhaul kit. Would like to use stepped head pistons, but it says for use with engines with 5 5/16 length valves, but does not specify that for the kit with flat head pistons? Would I need new valves to use the stepped head piston set?

AN EASY WAY TO GET YOUR SLEEVES OUT IS TO PUT A BEAD OR TWO OF WELD AROUND THEM ON THE INSIDE. IT WILL SHRINK THEM AND THEYLL COME RIGHT OUT.

5 5/16 sounds pretty short. That must be the Kerosene head. 8043 takes 5 3/8 valves. Not much difference and if the valves are a little deep in the holes I'd say they'd never hit the pistons.

Nebraska,

Thanks for info. Was reading the forum about dealing with people, sellers/buyers, and heard only good things about you. Love this forum and the people here.
And while I've got you, can't I just replace original pistons with stepped head or Firecraters without changing head or valves? Thanks Much,

Brian

No, the valves are sized to the head. The lower compression distilate and kerosene heads use shorter valves.

OK, I've just got the 8043 standard H head. Do I need to change valves to use the Firecrater pistons?

That's what I am trying to tell you. No, you can't change the valves. They have to match the head. Now as to if that head will work with the step pistons I can't tell.

I just looked at my parts manual, but I can't determine which head uses which length of valve, but I do know that the valves cannot be interchanged. The length of the valve is determined by the head that it fits. The 8043 head needs the valves that are the proper length for that head.

OK, got it. Sounds strange that I read so much hear about guys just throwin stepped head or firecraters in like they are just completely interchangeable? Other than spark advance and stuff like that.
Also, just tore the engine down again, removed the water pump this time, and now I can see the hole in the top of #1's water jacket. Gonna try and get sleeves out tonight. The hole is vertical 1 inch by 1/16th wide. Is this in a particularly bad area to repair?
Thanks for this and all your help Rusty, and all.

I was wanting to know how you proposed to fix this crack? Weld it, then the hole will have to be bored. Put the sleeve in and JB Weld? Please update us as to how you propose to fix it, what you do and your success. Are there more cracks that you cannot see?

Tom, Keep trying to return your emails via aol, but says your screen name is not there? Appreciate your latest advice though. I was going to pull and then repair, but now I'll try to get to this first, if I can. Then I'll go ahed and pull all the sleeves and see if I have any other holes. Yes, my block may be junk, I don't know yet. Pulling the block would be next to impossible for me, working in a small garage with gravel floor and no hoist. But I'll get 'er done somehow, someday.
Thanks

Brian

Hey Tom,
Tried all night to get the sleeves out, no luck. Had a feeling that was going to be the case. I took the water pump off today, as I re-tore the engine down, and looked into the block and saw the waterway going down the right side, and then left of that, on the top of #1 water jacket was a vertical crack, about 1" by 16th". Until I get sleeves out won't know if I have more. Hopefully this is it.
