Hello,
I have a 1946 farmall H and it won't shift into 5th gear. It will go into all of the other gears just fine. When you try to put it in 5th it just kicks the shifter out of what would be 5th. When you shift into fourth it is just fine, but when you go to shift into fifth it seems like something is stopping it from going all the way. The shifter doesn't move as far as the other gears do. It is like a noch that you can't get past. When you attempt to put it in fifth and you let out the clutch the tractor moves a little and the shifter gets kicked into neutral and then you can hear the gears grind. When I go down my hill and coast then shift into 5th then let out the clutch when I get to the bottom of the hill it will stay in if you hold the shifter, but once the tractor goes under a load it will kick out of 5th. Could it be that something is in the way? Is it worn shaft/gears. And how would you fix it, where can I get parts. How much would they cost? And do I have to tare down the whole transmission? Also, how do you insert a picture? I have a picture of the gears and I want to show it.

More than likely, your 4/5 slider gear is worn out. You're going to need to find a good used one from the salvage yard, or a new one. This is a common problem because of starting in 4th and shifting to fifth on the go and grinding the gears. The gear that wears out is an internal and is actually like a splne. Also, your bearings may be worn and have play, contributing to the problem. To fix it, input shaft and gear (with two bearings) at front of transmission must come out through the bottom of the clutch housing and the top must come off the transmission. If you decide to tackle this job, get a parts catalog so you can see from the diagrams what you are getting into and also a service manual is a good idea. Gaskets, bearings, the gear and seals to fix this right will end up costing several hundred dollars.

Before you take it all apart, check to see if there is some thing holding it out of gear. It sounds like the tractor was originally sold on steel and IH locked it so you could not use 5th. I am sorry but I can not help you on fixing it. I know some one else can tell you how. Good Luck,,,,, ,,,,, ,,Boyd

If sold on steel the bolt will not let it begin to go into gear. That's what I thought at first too, until he mentioned the grinding, and the shifter popping out. I have an H like that, I can hold it in, though -- will fix it someday.

In addition to what has been said in the two posts addressing this issue, There are pictures in the archives of H 4-5 trans gears with the dammage visible. Though it would be easier to see if there were good gears to compare it to. The fifth gear position on the shift pattern is 1.5-2 inches shorter than the first and third slots. It seems like a large amount till a person operates the tractor for years, then it seems normal and un remarkable. It is definately shorter in throw. My bet it is time for a front input shaft, and 4-5 slider! JimN Let us know!

williamf is correct. Yours is a common problem. 5th gear is a direct connection to the main shaft coming from the engine, there is no gear reduction. You have one, maybe both of the problems William mentioned.

It's possible that there is a problem with the shifter - bent fork not pushing the gear all the way, detent not seating to hold it in place - but it souonds more like a worn out gear. The way that particular gear works - it's not like two rotating opposite each other, it's more like coupling two shafts together - worn teeth will serve to push the two ends apart.
You're going to need to take the cover off. Not a giant job, even I managed it. At least you don't have to split the tractor. Step one is get a service manual. You can order what you need from here at YTMAG. I recommend the H Service Manual and the I&T. And an Owners Manual for when you get finished. I would stay away from the Tran and Final Drive manual - if it's the one I got it covers several other models that are too unlike the H to be much use.
$25 to $30 apiece seems like a lot compared to the free advice you'll get here, but the pictures are worth it.
Good Luck,Wm
