300 Transmission Noise

Still have a knocking noise in my "300" tranmission and can't find out where it is coming from. I just fininished putting it back together after splitting it for the second time. I doubled checked all of the bearings and they all seemed to be fine. When you push the clutch in the knocking noise stops. The noise seems to be coming from the gear area in the transmission housing. I would appreciate any thoughts on where my problem may be. Originally I replaced a couple of gears which had broken teeth. Thanks in advance.

If bearings and gear teeth are in good shape a few other things to check comes to mind. The reverse idler shaft and bushings, fork out of whack and letting gears rub togeather,if thats the case noise should stop when tractor drives in the gear. Don't know if T/A was removed,if not the nut that holds T/A clutch carrier may have backed off or T/A clutch has some parts bad.

Also if lower shaft was removed did you put the correct side of constant mesh gear to front and put spacer, bearing ETC. in proper order. If engine is running rough some tractors will rattle some in neutral.

I just got my 300U broke in 3rds and found all the drive shaft bearings worn out,(between the clutch and trans) to the point you could press out the inner races. That old gal was real loud around the shifter area. I got all new bearings from Case/IH, and the price was not that bad either (SHOCK). I am however, still looking for a trans drive shaft for a non t/a tractor. Mine is VERY pitted where the transmission pilot bearing rides.

Stu; Does your tranny make the same noise on both sides of the T/A[high or low]? Never heard of one doing that, but strange things happen. If the noise changes speed when you shift the T/A, then its tran related. If it stays the same speed, then it may be clutch related. Good luck.

Yes, makes noise in high and low range. The knocking noise increases when it is in high range.
